maritime - Transphibian

Robot Overview

  • Safely clear mines in surge-dominated waters...
  • Perform maritime surveillance and reconnaissance...
  • Keep personnel out of harm’s way...
The iRobot Transphibian, a fin-powered vehicle that is both a mobile UUV and a bottom crawler, can autonomously insert itself into the water and operate in a very shallow area. The fins enable the robot to navigate with 6 degrees of freedom – even in surge – to avoid obstacles and maneuver in tight spaces. Expandable and adaptable, Transphibian supports a wide variety of defense, first responder and commercial applications.
  • Mine Detection
  • Harbor Defense
  • Surveillance / Reconnaissance

Key Features:

Transphibian uses a combination of fins and ballast tanks to swim and crawl on missions, including mine clearance in surge-dominated waters in or near the surf zone, where other UUVs are unable to maintain control.
Capable of swimming long distances, Transphibian can be deployed from a safe standoff distance, keeping the operator out of harm’s way. The robot is difficult to detect; Transphibian swims submerged to its destination, guided by periodic GPS updates.
Featuring a modular open architecture, Transphibian is able to carry a wide array of sensors and payloads, including a high-definition underwater camera.
