Urbie was developed for DARPA, which requested white papers for a rugged, reliable, man-packable robot that could climb stairs and be used in urban combat. The other invited organizations wrote papers outlining their thoughts on urban combat robots. Only iRobot submitted a working robot prototype – along with the white paper.
